Best Cordless Hedge Trimmers

01. Black+Decker LHT2436 Cordless Hedge Trimmer – Best Overall

Black+Decker LHT2436 Cordless Hedge Trimmer

Check Price on Amazon

BLACK+DECKER’s LHT2436  provides plenty of power,. It has a great run time on a single charge and can cut branches up to 3/4 inch thick.

It’s an all-rounder cordless hedge trimmer overall.

The Lithium Advantage

The Black+Decker LHT2436 gets power from a 40-volt lithium-ion battery system that offers both power and excellent run time.

It can trim up to 6000 square feet of hedges per charge – and you can recharge the battery in about 1 hour with the 40-volt Energy Star-rated fast charger that comes included.

Thanks to the Lithium-ion technology in a trimmer’s battery, more power can now be put in a smaller and compact battery. They also have a longer life cycle than other types, like NiCAD batteries, and they also hold their charge longer.

The battery is way more capable than standard cordless trimmer batteries. It twice as powerful as many other battery hedge trimmers thus it’s perfect for the toughest trimming jobs.

The 24-inch Dual Action Blade

The trimmers come with a pre-hardened, rust-resistant steel blade that’s dual-sided. That means it’ll cut more efficiently and deliver less vibration at the same time as well.

The blade makes 2400 cutting strokes per minute, and it quickly cuts branches that are up to 3/4 inch thick. They’re made of quality steel; thus, they stay sharp for a more extended period.

Cutting Power and Convenience

This battery hedge trimmer features BLACK+DECKER’s exclusive PowerDrive Transmission. That means it delivers more power from the engine to the blades so you can cut more effortlessly and without stalling.

There’s minimal power wastage with this transmission mechanism, and more of the battery’s power gets utilized.

And as I said, the dual-action blades help to reduce vibration, which makes operating the trimmer easier and you feel less fatigue.

The operation is comfortable too, thanks to the full wrap-around front handle that provides comfortable gripping. The wrap-around auxiliary handle is for comfort in both vertical and horizontal trimming applications.

And the handle was large enough to accommodate gloves too.

Overall, it’s a compact design, less vibration, and a comfort grip that makes the trimmer super easy to use and causes less user fatigue.

Pros
  • A powerful battery, excellent battery backup.
  • Dual-action blades cut efficiently
  • Less vibration
  • Very lightweight
  • Bliss to operate
Cons
  • Battery sometimes makes a strange clicking noise
  • Not the quietest one

Bottom Line

There’s a reason the Black+Decker’s LHT2436 cordless hedge trimmer is on the very top of my list. The high-capacity battery, dual-action blade, and comfortable operation make this trimmer a steal for the price.

02.Black+Decker 20V Max Cordless Hedge Trimmer with Powercommand Powercut, 18-Inch

Black Decker Hedge Trimmer

Check Price on Amazon

The first trimmer came to my list as one of the whiles the BLACK+DECKER, LHT321FF model should be considered as runner-up!

It is a similar product to its big brother – the earlier reviewed LHT2436 model. It offers the same powerful and comfortable cutting experience with all the cutting conveniences – just the numbers are lower this time, and so it the price tag.

Power & Blade

The LHT2436 has excellent power too like its elder brother. It comes with a decent motor that gives you the energy for “most” trimming tasks. With the amount of power that gets delivered to the blade, it can cut ¾ inch thick branches – with a little more effort though.

Now, I said “most” because it doesn’t pack that much power like the LHT2436 – so it’s not better suited for the toughest job out there. It might get those done, but there’ll be a need for the manual effort of yours – and it won’t be convenient.

However, don’t get me wrong – it’s not underpowered by any means. It’ll just effortlessly handle medium-duty jobs and struggle with heavy-duty ones.

This one too comes with similar blades as the LHT2436, just a bit shorter this time. It has the same pre-hardened, rust-resistant 22-inch dual-action steel blade that again causes for 40-percent less vibration than single action blades.

And it stays sharp for a more extended period again just like its older brother. The blade cuts cleanly and comfortably overall.

Operation Conveniences

The same full wrap-around front handle is featured in this model too. The handle provides a comfortable gripping area in all cutting orientations. The soft grip ensures a secure and comfortable grip while trimming.

And it’s even lighter than the LHT2436 model as it features a shorter blade and a Lil smaller battery. It was made to be the compact version of the LHT2436. So maneuvering this trimmer is even more comfortable and causes less user fatigue.

It has cord retention that ensures zero accidental unplugging and lock-off switch, which prevents accidental start-up.

Pros
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Easy to maneuver
  • Comfortable grip
  • 20-inch high-quality dual-action blade
Cons
  • Not great for heavy-duty jobs

Bottom Line

The LHT321FF is a similarly excellent hedge trimmer as the LHT2436. It is a just compact version of that model.

So you may name it as the best compact cordless hedge trimmer with a smaller price tag. It’s a reasonably priced hedge trimmer that gets the job done for medium-duty use.

Not a cordless hedge mower that you are thinking of, but it’s technically a cordless hedge trimmer. I’m talking about the Sun Joe HJ604C 2-in-1 cordless grass shear + hedger that’s perfect for post-mowing touch-ups in tight spaces.

It is an excellent tool for small gardens, hedge grooming, and to trim areas your traditional mower cannot reach. It’s a 2-in-1 tool that you can quickly and easily convert from a grass shear to a hedger.

Battery & Blade

This great little useful trimmer boasts a 7.2V lithium-ion battery for a hassle-free,  and cordless operation. The battery, being a lithium-ion one, ensures a long battery life.

It produces enough power for the little motor it has. You won’t, either way, need to do heavy trimming in a post-trimming session, so it’ll be more than good enough for your needs.

The Sun Joe HJ406C is a 2-in-1 machine, so it features two blades. The grass shear blade is a 4-inch one while the hedge trimmer one in 6 inches in length.

The interchangeable blade system lets you easily convert the tool from a grass shear to a hedge trimmer. Both the four and 6-inch blades are high in quality. Both of the blades are built from durable steel for long-lasting wear & reliable performance.

Operation

At only 2.5 lbs, the tool is extremely lightweight and super convenient to manoeuvre. It features an ergonomic handle as well for easy control and handling.

Being so lightweight and having an ergonomic handle, the sun Joe is easy to control and handle. You can perform a range of post-grooming tasks with less strain and more comfort.

The machine powers up instantly with a push button to start shrubbing or shearing with cordless convenience. There’s this safety switch as well to prevent accidental starting.

Pros
  • Great little trimmer for post-trimming jobs
  • Ultra-lightweight
  • 2-in -1, shear + hedger
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • Changing the blades take effort

Bottom Line

The sun joe Hj604C is a great little tool for post-trimming jobs. You can instantly convert it from shear to hedger. The battery lasts for quite a long time. It’s super easy to manoeuvre and operate. You can say it’s a great tool to have for such a little money.

04. Worx WG291 56V 24″ Cordless Electric Hedge Trimmer – Best for Power & Battery Life

Worx WG291 Cordless Electric Hedge Trimme

Check Price on Amazon

If you’re a fan of power and long battery life, I’ve got an excellent recommendation for you. Introducing you to the WORX WG291 56V cordless electric hedge trimmer, which is the most powerful trimmer that WORX has offered.

The insane 56V battery can provide gas-like power while being electric-like silent. It ensures fantastic service time for one single charge as well.

Battery and Blades

The highlight of the WORX WG291 is the large battery as you can already tell.

The 56-V Max lithium-ion battery delivers gas-like power. No matter what you have to do – topiary sculpting or shaping tasks, the WG291 always has plenty of power to get the job done.

There’s ample power to clean-cut branches that are up to 3/4 inches thick in diameter.

Another major perk of this massive battery is the service time for one single charge. I’m sure you’re not a fan of being left in the dust, as your trimmer has run out of charge in the middle of a session, or you forgot to charge your hedge trimmer.

This trimmer offers a great service time for a single charge with its massive battery that you can do multiple sessions on different days with it.

Coming to the cutting blades, you’re getting dual-action, stamped-steel, smooth-cutting 24-Inch ones that provide fast, clean cuts and produces less vibration than single action ones.

It reduces user fatigue, especially in the case of extended use periods. The cutting diameter is up to 3/4 inches.

It is a factory-sharpened, fully hardened blade that operates at 2200 strokes-per-minute.

This model also has this blade tip protector that prevents you from unintentionally cutting anything you wanted to keep intact.

Convenience of Operation

The Euro-styled cordless hedge trimmer features a soft grip rear handle and D-shaped front handle that ensures maximum control when cutting sides and tops of hedges.

For comfort, it has an over-mold soft grip that reduces fatigue and improves grip.

There’s that transparent, hi-impact handguard that’s angled in front of the handle. It provides protection, lets you see what you are doing, and helps deflect debris. It has the battery power indicator to see your current status of the battery.

At 10.1 lbs, it’s not the most lightweight electric hedge trimmer out there, though it is then similarly powerful gas ones. However, for an electric hedge trimmer, it’s on the heavier side, which is the cost of the larger battery capacity.

Pros
  • Very powerful
  • Amazing battery life
  • Dual-action blade
  • Transparent hand-guard
Cons
  • A little on the heavier side

Bottom Line

If you’d love to have gas-like power on your electric hedge trimmer, you won’t be disappointed with this one. Additionally, it offers similarly excellent battery life too – and those come in the cost of 2-3 lbs of extra weight. If you can handle that, you’ll love this beast.

05. Makita XHU02Z 18V LXT Cordless 22″ Hedge Trimmer  – Best Battery Hedge Trimmer for Low Noise

Makita XHU02Z Cordless Hedge Trimmer

Check Price on Amazon

If you get so annoyed with noise just like I do, maybe that’s why you’ve decided to try electric hedge trimmers. But still, think they’re not quite enough? – the Makita XHU02Z is here to prove you wrong.

Electric hedge trimmers are already quiet, and the Makita XHU02Z takes it to another level. This trimmer, being 25% quieter than other models,  stays almost silent when you trim.

Battery & Blade

The XHU02Z comes with a decent 18V battery that delivers adequate power. It’s not anywhere close to gas ones, but there’s enough power to get medium-duty jobs done.

The power mechanism shines when it comes to charging. The 18-volt lithium-ion battery is the fastest to get recharged in its category. You can take a small break and then get right back to work, instead of waiting for hours to recharge.

However, it’s a shame that the charger doesn’t come included, you have to purchase that separately.

There are even smarter features in it when it comes to power mechanics.

This model comes packed with Star protection Computer controls that protect you against overheating, over-discharging and overloading.

This control exchanges data within the hedge trimmer and the control panel in real-time to monitor and report conditions for a more secure system, improved battery life, and better performance.

The battery capacity warning system will let you know that it’s recharge time by turning the indicator light on and automatically stopping the motor.  Thus it prevents over-discharging and improves battery longevity.

The hedge trimmer is powered by a Makita-built motor that delivers 2, 700 SPM for increased cutting speed.

And pair that with the 22″ Double-Sided Dual-action Shear blade to get a precision cutting.

Operation

I know it’s annoying to wake up by the sound of tools, and even more annoying when that happens without warning. But you won’t be similarly annoying your neighbors if you take the Makita electric cordless hedge trimmer home.

It has a well-thought and smartly engineered anti-vibration structure with five different cushions in the motor housing that not only minimizes the vibrations but also reduces sound emission.

This unit has a lower noise level at only 87 dba, which is 25% quieter than most other cordless hedge trimmers.

This means less annoyance for both you and your neighbor.

Weighing at only 7.4 lbs and being 38″ long overall, this machine is quite easy to manoeuvre, so there will be less fatigue from more prolonged operations.

Pros
  • Ultra-quiet electric hedge trimmer
  • Smart power control mechanism
  • Star protection Computer controls
  • Safe and secure from electric hazard
Cons
  • Lacks power for heavy-duty jobs

Bottom Line

The Makita XHU02Z was quite thoughtfully designed having specific uses in mind. This machine is designed to be ultra-secure, quiet, and powerful enough for medium-duty jobs. It that’s what you want from your hedge trimmer, take this home.

Dewalt DCHT860M1 hedge trimmer

Check Price on Amazon

Want something professional-grade and not going to shy away to pay the extra sum? Consider the Dewalt DCHT860M1 professional-grade cordless electric hedge trimmer.

The hardened and factory-sharpened blades ensure long life with lasting sharpness and consistently provides a precise cut. It also includes a safety sheath to protect the user or anyone else from those sharp dual blades.

The top cover is removable so you can easily access brushes. So is the gear case cover that lets you quickly change blades – that’s a lot of removable stuff.

Operation

This “professional-grade” trimmer, weighing at 11.9 lbs, is on the heavier side which is justifiable though. The large battery contributes to some of that and others come from the solid materials it’s built of.

So there’s a good chance that you’ll need both hands to handle the tools, especially for above-the-head operations.

However, it at least makes sure that your grabbing is comfortable. It features a wrap-around auxiliary handle that allows for a soft and comfortable grip in multiple cutting orientations.

There’s a safety lock for controlled/fast actuation, and Xenoy housing gives superior impact resistance and durability.

Pros
  • Professional-grade trimmer
  • Gas like power
  • Superior durability
  • Very well built
Cons
  • Heavy for an electric trimmer
  • A bit on the expensive side

Bottom Line

The Dewalt DCHT860M1 is for those people who like robust and powerful stuff, and ready to pay the price for it – which in this case, is 2-3 lbs of added weight and a few extra bucks. Paid the price, the performance will be mind-blowing – no doubt on that.

08. Greenworks 22272 20-Inch 40V Cordless Pole Hedge Trimmer – A Very Good Cordless Pole Hedge

Greenworks 22272 Cordless Pole Hedge Trimmer

Check Price on Amazon

People that are looking for an extension pole to use a cordless electric hedge trimmer for long-reaching hedges, here’s the product for you.

It is the green works  GMAX 40-volt  lithium-ion 2.0 amp hour 20-inch extended reach hedge trimmer that comes included with battery and charger.

The 40-V battery is quite surprising for a pole hedge trimmer, and the blade cuts excellent. The build quality is on the par side, but so is the price.

Battery & Cutting

The G-Max electric pole saw comes with a large 40-V battery that delivers excellent power to cut things of height. And the service time for one single charge was quite impressive too.

The battery life was good, and as it has no memory, you get the freedom to charge it as many times as you like without wearing the battery out.

It comes with 20-inch steel-made dual-action blade that offers optimal performance and durability. The blade does an excellent job cutting. If you use some type of lubricant on the blades between uses, you’ll get better performance.

Extension & Operation

That shaft extension is 6.5 feet. 5/8-Inch cutting capacity for easy and controlled trimming of most hedges and bushes. Make sure you spray it down with a disinfecting spray (Lysol or similar) to kill any fungus, so diseases won’t Ibe spread from one plant to another.

You can trim at multiple angles thanks to the three positions pivoting head that adjusts blade with extended reach handles. If you feel adjusting three different levers every time is a hassle, you can use a couple of zip ties to depress the lever permanently.

The item weighs 9.6 pounds, but it feels light because of the position you operate it in. The most weight is at the bottom.

However, the build is not great. The plastic tends to deteriorate over time, and the top lacks strength. You’ll need some manual fixes on it after a couple of years.

Pros
  • Good power and battery life
  • Cuts well
  • Affordably priced
  • Three-position head adjustability.
Cons
  • Delicate build quality

Bottom Line

The idea of a cordless electric hedge trimmer is praiseworthy and demands appreciation. It quite well does the job it’s expected to do, being way less priced than expensive gas power pole saws. The idea is excellent, but it’s the execution that leaves a little to be desired.

09. Greenworks 20672, 8.5′ 40V Cordless Pole Saw

Greenworks 20672 Cordless Pole Saw

Check Price on Amazon

Here’s another pole saw from Greenworks that’s built a little better. It is a 40V cordless pole saw with a robust 8-inch bar and chain. The battery is powerful and long-lasting, just like the previous model.

It has an easy push-button start and its lightweight construction makes yard work a whole lot easier.

Battery & Cutting

This model too comes with a powerful 40V battery that delivers ample power to the motor and the battery run time is reasonable also. You’ll get more than an hour doing continuous trimming with it which is excellent.

It features an 8-inch cordless pole saw. The pole on it can extend up to 8 feet and collapses to 5 feet. The robust 8-inch bar and chain have a 3/8-inch chain pitch.

Together this saw does the job of cutting very well. You can quickly and efficiently cut limbs from 1/2″ to 6″ diameter from the safety of the ground. You can reach 12 or 15 feet high limbs even without fully extending the shaft.

Operation

The pole saw weighs around 9 lbs, and most importantly, the weight is well-distributed. Thus it feels well balanced, and it’s easy to handle. There won’t be noticeable fatigue from extended operations.

It starts and stops instantly. You can either go for sawed-off shotgun mode or use it with the included extension segment. You can reassemble it quickly without any tools needs.

It features an automatic oiler and chain tensioning. It’s quite economical on chain oil, and you can quickly check oil levels. Refilling is simple and clean too. So is the cleaning and wiping down after use.

It felt sturdy to me, so I hope it’ll serve you for quite a long time.

However, the battery is quite hard to get out of the saw and not too easy to get out of the charger either. And though there’s not much overall fatigue, your thumb might be sore after using this continuously for a while.

Pros
  • 8 feet extension shaft
  • Good motor power
  • Cuts clean
  • Automatic oiler and chain tension
Cons
  • Battery mechanism is complex
  • Make thumbs sore on longer session

Bottom Line

The 8.5′ Cordless electric pole saw is a robust tool that comes it such an affordable price. It very well takes care of the job it’s supposed to and makes it worth each penny.

Buying Guide – What to Look for in a Cordless hedge Trimmer

Cordless hedge trimmers are not the most straightforward machines, to be honest. There are quite a few things that you need to keep in mind to pick the best one.

Battery Power & Service Time

There’s no doubt that power is the core strength of a trimmer. The power of electric hedge trimmers is determined by the battery Volts. The higher the voltage, the more power it delivers.

Another metric regarding the battery is Ampere. The higher the Ampere it has, the more time it’ll serve on a single charge.

For a conventional hedge trimmer, consider getting one with at least 20+ volts battery. There are some with even 56-volts that are just beasts of an electric trimmer.

Lithium-ion batteries are the top technology for electric hedge trimmers yet – they’re efficient at holding the charge for a more extended period.

Blade

There are four things that you want to know about the blades.

The Distance Between Teeth – it determines how effectively it’ll cut branches of different thicknesses. I prefer blades that can cut branches of ¾ inches thick.

Single-Sided or Dual-Sided? – Single-sided blades are easier to control and manoeuvre, but they’re less efficient when it comes to cutting. In contrast, dual-action blades are a little tougher to control, but they cut quite more efficiently and reduces vibration by quite a significant margin.

Blade Length – Similar to above, shorter blades are more comfortable to control, but they cut less within a specific time. Longer ones make the machine heavier thus they’re tougher to control, but they cut more. Consider getting shorter ones (around 20 inches or less) if you have small areas to cut. Larger ones if you need to reach far and cut a lot.

Material and Build – Blades are ideally made from hardened steel, and they’re better sharpened with automated tools in factories.

Ease of Operation & Security

The things to look at –

Weight – The lighter the trimmer is, the easier it is to manoeuvre aka operate.

Padding – Comfortable padding on handles makes grabbing blissful.

Type of Handles – Primary and secondary handle combinedly should offer control and comfort.

Safety Features – There should be some accidental start protection features like buttons or levers.

Durability, Noise, Vibration

These are all self-explanatory.

It should be made of robust materials so it can serve you for a long. However, solid materials mean added weight, remember that – just like the DEWALT trimmer.

Electric trimmers are already quiet, but they’re not silent. Some models further reduce noise; I love them.

And the less vibration it’ll produce, the less fatigue it’ll cause to the user.

1. How to Get Optimal Performance From a Cordless Hedge Trimmer?

Buying the best cordless hedge trimmer might not be all – you’ve got to know how to use the full potential of it. Here are a few tips to get the right model.

Keep The Blades Shiny – Blades are the things that actually cuts those hedges, and it’s the most crucial thing for any cutting tool. No matter how much power the engine delivers, dull blades = inefficient cutting.

You want to visit a local shop or an authorized dealer shop (if available) after every few months to get the blades sharpened. Or if you’re good with machines, you yourself can give a try.

You’ll need two things – a sharpening file and a whetstone. Use the file to sharpen the blade and ensure that you’re only moving in the direction of the cutting edge, never otherwise. Remove the build-up from the bottom with a whetstone.

After you’re done, spray resin solvent on the blades so that they don’t rust. Here’s a little clip to help you with the process.

Start Slowly – Cutting hedges is quite similar to cutting hairs – make sure o start by taking a small amount off the hedge. Start from the sides and cut from the bottom up, and also make sure that you cut in the direction of the hedge growth.

Keep it Clean – When in-action, your trimmer will collect sap, dirt, and other residues, and the remains of the hedge as well. It will make the blades less efficient and might cause to deteriorate the longevity of the trimmer.

After every session, make sure that you clean the overall trimmer. Carefully pick out any twigs, leaves, or other bits of debris. Spray the blades with a resin cleaning solvent and wipe off the resin.

2. How to Maintain a Cordless Hedge Trimmer?

Cordless hedge trimmers are not the toughest to maintain, no worries. Here’re a few frequent and long-term maintenance tips for them –

After every use,

  1. Power off the device immediately after use, don’t keep it going for no reason.
  2. Take off the battery.
  3. Clean any dust and dirt using clothes or brushes, don’t apply any grease removing agent.
  4. Spray the blade with a resin-removing solvent and use a piece of cloth to clean it.
  5. Insert the battery and test run it again for a moment.
  6. Finally, remove the battery again, insert the slot cover, and secure the blade with the blade cover.

For long-term,

  1. Keep the blades lubricated always.
  2. Grease the gearbox as frequently as you can – once a weak will be okay. A pea-sized amount of white lithium grease will do it.

3. What Are the Safety Tips For Using a Cordless Hedge Trimmer?

There are a few safety measures that you need to ensure while using your trimmer. Such as  –

The right way to start your trimmer is first to place it on the ground and then hold it with your less stronger hand. Then use your stronger hand to start the trimmer.

Make sure you’re standing on a solid base while operating your trimmer – it’s better to avoid ladder, stool, etc. You don’t want any intruder within 40-45 of you while you’re working with the trimmer.

Use both hands to hold your trimmer no matter how lightweight it is. Keep an eye open for the things you don’t want to cut (ex: electric cables). Stop the machine as quickly as possible if you hit any such thing.

You want to have your hearing protection, eye protection glass, non-slip shoes, or preferably boots, work gloves, and long pants on while in action. And it’s a good practice to have a look at the user manual.

When trimming sides, you want to work with a swinging, bottom-up action. Try not to extend your arms way in front of your body to reach a hedge. You’ll lose balance in that way. Instead, move close with your body.
